Whilst traumatic and acquired brain injuries are not degenerative or progressive in nature, secondary physical problems or "co-morbidities", can arise, and these can have just as devastating an impact upon the individual as the primary diagnosis.
Alongside the direct negative effect on our clients, co morbidities result in worse health outcomes, require more complex clinical management and lead to increased health and social care costs.
One example is enforced immobility that can result following a catastrophic brain injury. This can lead to impairments including joint contracture, reduced bone density and risk of fragility fracture, impaired respiratory functioning associated with increased frequency of hospitalization, and an increased risk of skin breakdown and pressure sore development.
At Neuro Rehab PT, we are experts in identifying co morbidities, and ensure that robust, pro active physiotherapeutic management plans are implemented to ensure that quality of life does not become compromised.
